Government and Incubator Support Available in India
These four programs are the most relevant for early-stage Indian startups right now. Each has different eligibility, timelines, and outcomes. Know which one fits where you are.
NIDHI PRAYAS 2.0 (DST)
For founders turning an idea into a working prototype of a physical product. Paid through PRAYAS Centres:
- Up to Rs 20 lakh at a PRAYAS Centre
- Up to Rs 40 lakh at an Advance PRAYAS Centre
- No DPIIT recognition needed
Hardware and physical products only. Pure software, apps, e-commerce and services do not qualify. The Startup India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS) stopped taking new applications on 31 May 2026, and no new call has been announced. See the SISFS guide.
Entrepreneur-in-Residence (EiR) Programs
Monthly support for early-stage innovators who need runway to build without burning savings.
- Fellowship range: Rs 10,000 to Rs 30,000 per month
- Duration: up to 1 year
- Offered through select incubators and state programs
Not a grant. Think of it as a stipend to buy you time.
Incubation Programs
Beyond funding, incubators offer structured support:

Getting into a good incubator is itself a credibility signal that helps with future fundraising.
DPIIT Startup Recognition
Not funding, but a foundation for everything else:

- Tax exemptions under Section 80-IAC
- Self-certification under labour and environment laws
- Faster patent examination

What You Need to Qualify for Startup Funding
Government schemes are not charity. They look for specific signals before approving anything.

- A clear problem-solution fitCan you explain the problem in one sentence and the solution in two?
- A working prototype or MVPFor most incubation programs and state seed grants, you need something to show, not just a pitch deck.
- Market validation and potentialEvidence that real people have the problem you are solving.
- A scalable business modelLocal or lifestyle businesses rarely qualify. Scalability is the filter.
