Kerala startup grants and KSUM programs 2026, complete guide

Kerala 10 min read By Mahesh Kadamkode, Incubateer

Kerala Startup Mission is one of India's most active state startup ecosystems, and one of the few that funds founders at every stage from idea to scale-up. Here is every KSUM grant program, what each actually requires, and the exact order you should apply in.

Quick facts, KSUM grants at a glance Idea Grant: ₹2L · Innovation Grant: ₹5L · Productisation Grant: ₹15L · Market Acceleration Grant: ₹25L · Scale-Up Grant: ₹30L · NIDHI Prayas (via KSUM): ₹10L · AgriNext: up to ₹50L · All equity-free · Registration at grants.startupmission.in required first

Why KSUM is one of India's best state ecosystems

Kerala Startup Mission was set up under the IT Department, Government of Kerala, and has become one of the most founder-friendly state startup bodies in India. The reason is structural: KSUM both funds startups directly through its own grant programs and acts as an approved incubator for multiple central government schemes including SISFS and NIDHI Prayas.

For a Kerala-based founder, this creates a compounding advantage. You don't need to find a separate incubator to access SISFS, KSUM itself is an approved SISFS incubator. You can route SISFS applications through KSUM, stack that with KSUM's own grants, and access NIDHI Prayas through the KSUM channel. The practical effect is that a well-positioned Kerala startup can access ₹40L+ in central and state non-dilutive funding without leaving the KSUM ecosystem.

Before you apply to anything: register on the KSUM portal

This is the most important thing most founders skip. Every KSUM grant requires your startup to be registered on the KSUM portal first. The registration is free and takes about 15 minutes. Without it, you cannot submit an application for any KSUM scheme.

Go to grants.startupmission.in, create an account, and fill in your startup profile. You'll need: company incorporation certificate (or founding team details if pre-incorporation), sector, stage, brief description of the problem and solution, and team bios. Keep this profile updated, KSUM evaluators look at your portal profile before reviewing your application.

The KSUM grant ladder, stage by stage

KSUM's grant programs are designed as a ladder. Each program targets a specific stage of the startup journey. The practical advice: apply to the program that matches your current stage, not the one with the highest amount.

KSUM Idea Grant, ₹2 lakhs

Stage: Pre-revenue, proof-of-concept
Who can apply: Individual founders or early teams with a validated idea, no working product required
Application: Rolling, you can apply any time
What KSUM evaluates: Problem clarity, team credentials, basic market hypothesis
Timeline to funds: 4-8 weeks from application

The Idea Grant is KSUM's entry point. ₹2L is modest but the process of applying is itself valuable, it forces you to articulate your problem statement and solution clearly. The rolling application window means you don't need to wait for a cycle to open. Apply now.

Common reasons for rejection: vague problem statement, no clear sense of who the customer is, or a "me-too" product without differentiation.

KSUM Innovation Grant, ₹5 lakhs

Stage: Working prototype exists or under active development
Who can apply: Registered companies (Pvt Ltd or LLP), prototype at any stage of completion
What KSUM evaluates: Technical feasibility of prototype, team's ability to execute, market validation attempt
Timeline: Quarterly selection cycles

The step up from Idea Grant. You need to show a prototype, it doesn't need to be polished or feature-complete, but it needs to be real. A wireframe is not a prototype for this program. A working (even rough) technical implementation is.

KSUM Productisation Grant, ₹15 lakhs

Stage: MVP built, some early traction
Who can apply: Companies with an MVP and demonstrable early traction, even a few paying users or letters of intent count
What KSUM evaluates: MVP quality, market evidence, revenue model clarity, team completeness
Timeline: Quarterly cycles, competitive selection

This is where the KSUM ladder gets meaningful. ₹15L for productisation is substantial non-dilutive capital. The competition increases here, you're being evaluated against startups that have something real. Come with user data, not just projections.

KSUM Market Acceleration Grant, ₹25 lakhs

Stage: Product in market, early revenue
Who can apply: Startups with a launched product and demonstrated early revenue or strong pipeline
What KSUM evaluates: Revenue traction, customer acquisition evidence, go-to-market strategy, team
Timeline: Bi-annual cycles

The Market Acceleration Grant is for startups that have crossed the "does anyone want this?" question and are now working on "how do we scale customer acquisition." Use of funds is typically for sales, marketing, partnerships, and hiring for growth functions.

KSUM Scale-Up Grant, ₹30 lakhs

Stage: Growth stage, meaningful revenue, looking to scale
Who can apply: Startups with proven unit economics, existing team, and a credible scaling plan
What KSUM evaluates: Revenue history, unit economics, scaling plan, team depth
Timeline: Annual or bi-annual selection

KSUM's largest direct grant. At this stage you're competing with more mature startups and the bar for evidence is higher. Come with a 12-month financial history, cohort analysis if applicable, and a specific plan for how the ₹30L will accelerate a measurable growth metric.

KSUM as NIDHI Prayas channel, ₹10 lakhs

KSUM is one of DST's approved NIDHI Prayas implementing partners. This means founders in Kerala can access the NIDHI Prayas grant (up to ₹10L for prototype development) through KSUM without going to a central NIDHI partner like an IIT.

The NIDHI Prayas application through KSUM follows the same criteria as the central program, it's for idea-to-prototype stage, technology-based ideas, and the funding is specifically for building the prototype. If you're applying for KSUM Innovation Grant, consider applying for NIDHI Prayas through KSUM simultaneously, they serve slightly different purposes and can stack.

KSUM AgriNext, up to ₹50 lakhs

Focus: Agri-tech and food-tech
Amount: Up to ₹50L
Backing: World Bank-backed program
Who can apply: Startups working in agriculture, food processing, supply chain, farmer services, or agri-input tech

AgriNext is KSUM's most generously funded sectoral program and is specifically backed by World Bank funding. Kerala's agricultural sector, coconut, spices, rubber, fisheries, creates real opportunities for agri-tech startups that understand the local context.

The application for AgriNext is more detailed than standard KSUM grants, expect to submit a full business plan, financial projections, and a clear articulation of the agri problem you're solving and for whom. Pilot data is expected at this funding level.

K-DISC Young Innovators Program

Administrator: Kerala Development and Innovation Strategic Council (K-DISC)
Who it's for: Students and young founders under 35, pre-incorporation stage

K-DISC runs the Young Innovators Program for students and early-stage founders. It's less about the funding amount (which is modest) and more about the structured support: mentorship, workshop access, and connections into the KSUM ecosystem. If you're a student or recent graduate with an idea, K-DISC is a logical first step before the KSUM Idea Grant.

KSUM incubators, physical homes for Kerala startups

KSUM runs and supports several physical incubation spaces in Kerala. Being physically incubated at one of these spaces strengthens your KSUM grant applications and gives you access to shared infrastructure, labs, and co-working facilities.

Maker Village (Kochi)

India's largest hardware startup incubator, run by KSUM in Kochi. If you're building a hardware product, IoT devices, electronics, medical devices, consumer hardware, Maker Village is the best-equipped incubation environment in South India outside of large IITs. Full PCB fabrication, 3D printing, electronics labs. Apply at makervillage.in.

Kerala Technology Innovation Zone (KTIZ)

KSUM's flagship incubation complex in Thiruvananthapuram. Sector-agnostic. Strong for software, fintech, health-tech, and enterprise SaaS startups. Co-working, meeting rooms, investor connect events.

Integrated Startup Complex, Thiruvananthapuram

One of KSUM's newest facilities, positioned as a full-stack startup support hub, incubation, acceleration, investor access, and government interface all under one roof in Trivandrum.

KSUM as your SISFS incubator

This deserves its own section because it changes the calculus for Kerala founders. KSUM is an approved incubator under the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS). That means:

For Kerala-based founders, routing SISFS through KSUM is almost always the right call, assuming KSUM is well-matched to your sector. The exception: if you're in a very specialized sector (e.g., defence tech, deep biotech) where a sector-specialist incubator would evaluate your application better, that incubator may be worth pursuing even if it's outside Kerala.

The right order for Kerala founders 1. Register on KSUM portal (grants.startupmission.in), free, 15 mins
2. Apply for KSUM Idea Grant (₹2L), rolling, apply now
3. Get DPIIT recognition in parallel (startupindia.gov.in), free, 5 days
4. As you build prototype, apply for NIDHI Prayas through KSUM (₹10L)
5. With MVP and users, apply for KSUM Productisation Grant (₹15L) and SISFS through KSUM (₹20L)
Total accessible before Series A: ₹47L+ in non-dilutive capital
